Took me about 9 months to get an appointment which is no big deal. There’s a wait everywhere. Emailed Lora in all my paperwork 2/28 with confirmation of my insurance info. Was told we were all set and had my first call with Dr. Karafa in early March. Really felt good about him and the appointment. So I wish I could separate his rating from the rest. On Friday 3/21 I find out Lora in fact did not confirm the insurance information and now my appointment on Monday needs to be cancelled. After nine months of waiting. When I went out of my way to confirm everything was in order. Even worse there was no accountability, no apology. A little empathy knowing people are waiting months and months for these appointments would go a long way. When I said that obviously I’ll need to cancel then I was told, “we will cancel per your request.” When very clearly I am canceling due to the incompetence of whoever was supposed to confirm my insurance based on my email to Lora 2/28. . I wouldn’t be cancelling otherwise. If your lucky enough to get someone process your paperwork properly I bet this is a great place and I’m really disappointed I can’t continue to work with Dr. Karafa and now have another 4 month wait elsewhere.

I felt very unheard during the evaluation. After what seemed like forever to get an appointment (which is fine, I know these places have a wait list a mile long) for one of our kids I was very taken back when the doctor asked “do you think your kid is just emotional?” During the evaluation. I was hopeful to get resources for our family and when I informed them that a therapist they recommended was out of a church and very religious and wasn’t comfortable with that and asked for a different recommendation they didn’t really have anything and had no idea that someone they recommended had a religious background which I thought was odd that they had no idea about a therapist they were recommending. If I have to get any more children evaluated I will definitely be seeking a different practice.

We had an original appointment in Deerfield, but it was canceled same day, while we were on the way there. It was kind of frustrating as we had to rearrange childcare and my husband missing work and cancel my son’s therapy sessions for the day. Was able to get in a few months later, but with Barrington location. The manager to call me to arrange the new appointment time, and she also mentioned that I will have part of the visit via phone (the parent interview) with the doctor versus everything all at once, which could be 4 to 6 hours. So in person would be one to three hours instead. I definitely appreciated that much more, as my son would be more prone to having a meltdown, and may not tolerate that so easily. We saw Dr. Kane, and she is absolutely wonderful. They conveniently make all three appointments at the same time (parent interview through phone, in person, evaluation, phone visit again to go over the reports that our generated), so we will meet with doctor came in about two weeks through the phone to go over the reports and I can forward to my son’s psychiatrist and ABA center so we can continue the therapies he has been receiving. The waiting room was nice and quiet, nothing overstimulating, which is wonderful, Waters, coffee, and tea if you like. Friendly receptionist, I definitely appreciate how detail oriented everybody is. I look forward to continuing to do our 3 year evaluations (for insurance purposes, they require a valuations every three years to continue ABA therapy because it is so expensive and sometimes insurance me try to deny a service even though it is needed. This is why three-year evaluations are very important) at one center. Thank you everybody for all you do.

After calling many, many therapists and being told that they were not taking new patients, I was excited when an employee at the call center for Thomson Memory told me that they ARE taking new patients- they only need my teenage son to come in for a full day of brain testing first, and THEN we can make an appointment with a therapist. It took months to get in, which isn't my complaint- it's expected. But after receiving the brain testing results, the doctor told me that their therapists aren't taking new patients! Luckily, my son isn't in a desperate state of mind. I just wanted to warn people that are. My husband is still glad that he took my son there because the brain testing was neat, even though it was pretty unrelated .

Watch out for the last minute “Professional Fees” that they tack on that insurance will not pay for. Ironic how those fees appear right before your appointment but did not exist when you made the appointment. It takes 4 months to get in to be told 5 days before your appointment they changed their policy this month.

I can't say enough about Dr. Jason Karafa. He was kind, compassionate and very knowledgeable. You can tell he loves what he does. I would highly recommend the Thomson Memory Center!

Dr. Jason is fantastic and the staff are wonderful. Great experience for the past 18 months. I highly recommend their practice.
